The Emancipating Youth Program pilot kicks off today. For the next 3 weeks, 20 at risk youth from the foster care system will learn about budgeting, banking, and credit. Learning these financial life skills have consistently been shown to increase the kids’ likelihood of surviving the first 2 years outside of the foster care system.
This program is sponsored by a generous grant from the OP and WE Edwards Family Foundation and is developed in partnership with Young Americans Center.”

Financial Literacy for Emancipating Youth
The most important news is the progress we've made on the Emancipating Youth Program. Over 300 young people leave the foster care system every year in the Denver Metro Area. Those that age out at 18 have lived in an approximately 9 homes since their 16th birthday. They have no safety net and have learned few skills to help them survive. The majority end up homeless, in jail, or pregnant. Two factors have been shown to significantly help these young people - having an adult in their life and having life skills like financial literacy. FAI has dedicated a great deal of our efforts this year to creating a program to support these kids by teaching them about budgeting, credit, and personal money skills.
Highlights of the program include a course developed and taught in partnership with Young Americans' Center, several one on one meetings with each of the participants, and pre and post course evaluations to demonstrate knowledge and behavior change. We have been working with many constituents to make sure that we are teaching these young people the skills that they need the most.
Generous support by the OP & WE Edwards Foundation will allow us to complete the pilot and begin to implement the program in several locations this Fall. We are looking for additional support to continue the program through the Fall and the future.
Financial Literacy Brown Bag Sessions
During MoneySmart CO week (April 21-26), FAI offered free brown bag sessions all week. Two courses were highlighted - "What's Your Number" and "Hardwired. "What's Your Number?" helps participants identify how much they need to save for the future and "Hardwired" identifies ways individuals can mange their instincts to better manage their money. Starting this Fall, we will offer these courses on a monthly basis at our office.
Staff & Volunteers
Roweena Naidoo has joined the FAI team as the VP of Programs and Development. Many of you know Roweena from her tremendous work at The Women's Foundation and as a board member of Planned Parenthood. She has already been instrumental in moving forward several efforts for FAI. It is a pleasure working alongside her.
I am humbled by the efforts of our volunteers and want to highlight the efforts of one of our board members. Last year Jean Lehman volunteered one day a week helping FAI develop our first program. She and volunteer Beth Ryan helped create the foundation of FAI and I am indebted to both. Clinical Psychologist, Susan Trickett, has continued to offer invaluable support in the development and analysis of our evaluation material. The efforts of all our volunteers and board members make our achievements possible.
Our New Location
After a year and a half of borrowing space from Young Americans' Bank, (thank you, Rich!) FAI has office space at 600 South Cherry St. This location, right outside of Cherry Creek, allows us to meet with partners and participants on a regular basis, work more efficiently as a team, and give us a more professional impression.
Thank you for your continued interest in FAI. We look forward to bringing you success stories of our work from across the state.
